Storage Revolution!
A solid-state drive (SSD) functions like a hard disk drive, it uses flash memory instead of spinning disk to store data. The idea of using flash memory to replace hard disk memory is not new, the technology has been around for about 30 years, but the cost has been prohibitive - until now. Solid state disk prices are falling, and computer makers are beginning to offer laptops and servers equipped with SSD.
Why SSD?
Solid state disks are about 3 to 4 times faster than typical disk drives (and will continue to improve further over HDD), and since SSD doesn't have moving parts it is not susceptible to mechanical failure like hard disk drives do. Also, compare to hard disk drive, its life-span is longer, uses less power, generate less heat, lighter, noiseless, operate at wider temperature range and is more resilient to shock and vibration.
On top of all that, for environment where high performance computing is required, SSD can even be more cost effective, this is because SSD deployment will requires less servers, software licenses, power and cooling.
